Dental Health Week: Precious Time And Precious Teeth

Dental health week is upon us again! It runs from the 7th to the 13th August and focuses on “Oral health for busy lives”. Although we all get caught up in our busy schedules, it is important to make time to look after our oral health.

Dedicating a little more time each day to brushing, flossing, hydration, and eating well ultimately saves us time and money. Even better, it keeps us in good shape and gives us the energy we need to tackle whatever arises in our busy lives.

And while most of us like to think we keep on top of our oral hygiene, regular check-ups and brushing our teeth twice daily, but when our busy lives get the better of us, these essential routines can become neglected.

For the full-time parent, housekeeper and breadwinner, time is often tight and this is where problems begin. Hectic schedules can lead to skipping dental appointments or incomplete dental routines, resulting in poor oral hygiene.

At United Smiles, we urge you to consider your dental health as part of saving time in your hectic schedule! We also suggest some strategies to help you keep a beautiful and healthy smile in your busy life.

Think Of Your Life As One Long Trip!

One way to maximise dental health and minimise time spent, is to do your oral hygiene routine wherever you are. So carry your dental care with you!

An essential for saving time on your teeth is a portable dental kit. Take a few moments to put together the following items:

  1. Soft-bristled travel toothbrush:Also buy a cover for your toothbrush, to keep the grime off.
  2. Fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque.
  3. Floss and floss threaders:  Floss helps to remove food particles trapped between teeth that could form into bacteria that hardens into plaque or tartar.
  4. Fluoride mouthwash:Mouthwash fights bacteria and freshens breath.

If you carry these items with you (and you can also buy dental “travel” kits commercially) you are always ready to take care of your dental health.

At Home Care

One obvious part of your oral hygiene should be a 2-minute brushing, twice a day.

You’ve probably heard us at United Smiles stress the importance of flossing. Flossing is an important part of your mouth’s health. You should floss at least once a day, ideally at night so that food does not stay between your teeth while you sleep.

Cleaning your tongue is an easy addition to your routine and is very good for your oral health. Tongue scrapers can be purchased at the store, but you can also use your toothbrush or floss to scrape your tongue.

Finally, rinse with mouthwash. Sip a small amount, swish for half a minute, spit it out and you are done!

This may seem like a lengthy routine but it actually only totals about 4 minutes. If you value your oral health and want to spend less time in a dental chair, it will be worth your time, we promise!

The Role Of Diet

As much as any other choices you make, your dietary choices affect your dental and overall health. And since nutrition should already be a part of your busy schedule, in this case all you need to do is make sure your dietary choices are consistent with dental health. Once you know how to eat for dental health, it will take no time out of your daily schedule – it just becomes part of eating.

Harmful acids and bacteria in your mouth are left behind from eating foods high in sugar and carbohydrates. These include carbonated beverages, some kinds of fruit juices, and many kinds of starch foods like pasta, bread and cereal.

Take care of your nutritional needs, avoid sugary and acidic foods, and you have taken a large step toward saving time down the road.
