How Eating Disorders Affect Your Oral Health

An eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa has many physiological affects on your body including adversely affecting your oral health.

Changes in the Mouth

Mucosa

• The gums may become reddened, inflamed or develop ulcers

Teeth

• Decay (holes in the teeth)
• Erosion (caused by acid from either your stomach or from acidic foods and drinks)

Gums and Bones

• You may be at greater risk of gum disease

Saliva

• Decreased amount of saliva causing a feeling of “dry mouth”

Appearance

• Teeth may start to look very shiny with small chips appearing on the front edges of your teeth.
• Teeth can also turn chalky or yellowish

Symptoms

• Sensitivity to cold or sweet foods/drinks
• Episodes of pain (from decay)
• Burning sensations or discomfort of the mucosa

Look After Your Mouth

• Use a soft toothbrush twice daily. Floss each tooth everyday.
• Maintain good oral hygiene all the time.
• Consult your dentist. They can demonstrate proper technique.
