No-Drill Dentistry in Mernda for Painless Tooth Decay Treatment

Have you heard about no-drill dentistry? From the name itself, it definitely indicates hope and a positive view about dental visits for people who often are stressed about the idea of facing the dental drill.

Researchers from the University of Sydney have found that dental caries can be stopped and treated through preventive oral care, without the drilling and filling procedures. The results of this seven-year study calls for a general shift towards a preventive approach in early dental decay treatment. For patients with dental fear, no-drill dentistry is a great reason to visit their dentist without experiencing the dreaded dentist’s drill.

Dental Caries or Tooth Decay

Dental professionals and scientist have struggled for many years to understand the exact cause of dental caries and the best way to stop it. Today, with the help of the Internet and your dentist, you can have a clear understanding of the chemical process that results in tooth decay.

The process of tooth decay is the same chemical process occurring in all other organic decomposition. The only difference is that the dental decay is happening in your mouth due to acid by-products that gradually destroy your precious teeth.

Once you notice the tooth decay is taking place, the process is already in an advanced stage. Detecting and stopping the development of decay before it requires the invasive procedure of drill and fill is something that modern dentistry has been trying to solve.

No-Drill Approach

There are systems that aim to provide dental care and end the need for invasive drilling and filling approach. These are the Minimum Intervention Dentistry, Atraumatic Restorative Dentistry and the Caries Management System. With close attention to the patient’s condition, early detection and treatment of decay and intensive training in dental home care, dental decay can be cured – and this is the basic idea behind these no-drill treatment programs.

The team of Professor Wendell Evans, lead author of the oral healthy study, developed the Caries Management System. Their latest study finds no-drill dentistry is capable of stopping early caries without using the traditional approach. The CMS is a ten-step non-invasive strategy for arresting and remineralising early lesions. The ten steps of CMS no-drill treatment are as follows:

“The CMS was first tested on high risk patients at Westmead Hospital with great success.

It showed that early decay could be stopped and reversed and that the need for drilling and filling was reduced dramatically. A tooth should be only be drilled and filled where an actual hole-in-the-tooth (cavity) is already evident”, said Professor Evans.
