Teeth grinding (bruxism) is the involuntary clenching, grinding, and gnashing of the teeth. The most common reason for grinding is when we try and compensate for an imperfect bite.
This is when the upper and lower jaw come together but the teeth do not seem to fit comfortably and you therefore try and force them into a perfect bite.
This generally happens during sleep, but some people also experience it when they are awake. Symptoms may include headaches, jaw joint or ear pain, aching teeth, cracked or chipped tooth enamel, and mobile teeth.
Other causes of teeth grinding include:
- Difficulty in dealing with stress
- Aggressive personality
- Competitiveness
- Nervous tension
- Sleeping habits
- Posture
- Diet
Signs of Teeth Grinding
- Teeth are starting to become flat
- Highly sensitive dentine (interior of the tooth)
- Cracking or ticking of the jaw
- Headache
- Earache
- Insomnia
- Tongue indentations
Night Splints
Due to the pressure that grinding puts on your teeth it is often recommended that people who grind their teeth during the night wear a night splint. This acrylic guard, similar in appearance to a sport mouthguard but much finer, prevents further damage to your tooth enamel, gums, and soft tissue. It will also reposition your jaw to its correct position so your muscles can relax while you sleep.
