It’s a fast paced, go! go!, and hectic world. It can be difficult to enjoy a few minutes of peace and calm without being the target of some noisy or obnoxious advertising campaign.
To offer a break in this stream of advertisement, the professionals at United Smiles are pleased to offer this small diversion – A brief collection of dental myths related to toothaches. Just for fun!
Some of the myths that revolve around how to cure a toothache can be quite entertaining.
- One common myth suggests using garlic on a toothache. There is a slight bit of truth to this myth. When crushed or finely chopped two chemicals in the garlic do join to form Allicin, which has antibiotic properties and can offer temporary relief. However, garlic can be irritating to the gum and it is NOT a long-term solution. Keep garlic where it belongs, on pizza or warding off vampires!
- Another example of a myth recommending an ineffective, maybe damaging approach, claims that placing an aspirin on a sore tooth is better than swallowing the aspirin. This is simply not true as aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) can cause swelling and burning in soft tissues as well as complicate other dental issues. Swallow your aspirin, don’t ‘apply’ it!
- Finally, a funny myth is that kissing a donkey, or some other equine family member, might cure a toothache. FALSE! The only way that this method could be effective is if the donkey was in a disagreeable mood and consequently kicked the kisser in their kisser, dislodging the exact tooth responsible for the toothache.
Chances of this ever happening are extremely low. Chances of causing a lot more pain than a singular toothache? Very high! Not recommended.
